TORONTO -- Astros right-hander Luis Garcia is headed back to the injured list.
Garcia exited in the second inning of Tuesday night’s loss to the Blue Jays at Rogers Centre with right elbow discomfort.
Making just his second start since returning from a 28-month absence, which included Tommy John surgery, he winced on an 88 mph pitch to Ernie Clement, then he appeared to point to his surgically repaired right arm while looking into the dugout.
Manager Joe Espada said Garcia flew back to Houston prior to Wednesday’s game to be evaluated by doctors.
“It was tough, man,” Espada said. “I feel for him like he’s my son. He works extremely hard and that’s a call as a manager you never want to get -- [to] be called to the mound because something is wrong. Hopefully we get him back, but that was a very tough conversation.”
Right-hander Nick Hernandez was recalled from Triple-A Sugar Land to take Garcia’s roster spot.
The injury comes after fellow right-hander Spencer Arrighetti was placed on the 15-day injured list last Wednesday with right elbow inflammation. Arrighetti is scheduled to get a second opinion this week.
