Quick poll: Ever seen back-to-back homers off opposite foul poles?

May 22nd, 2025

There are gap-to-gap hitters, and then there are pole-to-pole hitters.

The Arizona Wildcats did something at Globe Life Field on Thursday that was just wacky enough that it isn't likely to be repeated. They hit back-to-back home runs, each of which caromed off opposite foul poles. Double doink indeed.

The first came off the bat of Mason White, a lefty hitter ranked No. 134 on MLB Pipeline's Top 150 Draft prospects list, who laced a frozen rope off the right-field pole. One pitch later, the righty-hitting Adonys Guzman matched him off the pole in left. Consider for a moment the improbability of this happening, the relative rarity it is to see home runs hit off the foul pole at all, let alone in back-to-back at-bats, with one pitch separating them, to opposite sides of the field.

The closest thing we could come up with was Auburn's Cooper McMurray homering off opposite foul poles in the same game, incredible in its own right. But it doesn't quite measure up to the Wildcats' feat, which also helped them advance to the semifinals of the Big 12 Championship. You might say it put them in pole position.
