For the second straight day, the Yankees struck a deal for a veteran infielder ahead of the July 31 Trade Deadline, reaching an agreement with the Nationals to acquire Amed Rosario, the clubs announced on Saturday.
In exchange, Washington will receive right-handed pitcher Clayton Beeter (New York’s No. 20 prospect per MLB Pipeline) and 18-year-old outfielder Browm Martinez, who is currently playing in the Dominican Summer League.
TRADE DETAILS
Yankees acquire: INF Amed Rosario
Nationals acquire: RHP Clayton Beeter (NYY No. 20 prospect), OF Browm Martinez
Rosario, 29, hit .270/.310/.426 with five home runs in 158 plate appearances this season for the Nationals. He played mostly second base and third base for Washington, though he did also appear at shortstop and in the outfield.
"I know everybody [on the Yankees] … it helps a lot to go to a place where you know people or where you’ve heard great things about those guys," Rosario said. "Of course it’s going to make me feel a little bit more comfortable and perform at my best.”
Rosario, who played his first four MLB seasons with the Mets, is in his ninth Major League season overall and has been dealt prior to the Trade Deadline in three consecutive years -- in 2023, he was traded from the Guardians to the Dodgers, and in ’24, he signed with the Rays and was traded to the Dodgers.
“I feel great because whenever teams are in playoff contention, they always acquire me towards the end," Rosario said. "So I just feel really good about that.”
On the heels of acquiring third baseman Ryan McMahon from the Rockies on Friday, the Yankees further bolstered their infield depth with the addition of Rosario, something that they were rumored to be interested in doing even after the McMahon move.
The right-handed-hitting Rosario could serve in a platoon role at third with the left-handed-hitting McMahon, who has a slash line of .207/.289/.310 against lefties -- Rosario, by contrast, is slashing .299/.333/.483 against southpaws. Rosario can also plug in at the other infield positions, save for first base, when needed.
Beeter, 26, was a supplemental second-round selection by the Dodgers in 2020, and acquired by the Yankees in the trade that sent Joey Gallo to Los Angeles in 2022.
The right-hander made his Major League debut last season for New York, appearing in three games out of the bullpen. He appeared in two games earlier this month, giving up six runs over 3 2/3 innings, before being optioned to Triple-A. In 18 appearances for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre this year, he posted a 3.10 ERA with 33 strikeouts and 16 walks over 20 1/3 innings.
The Yankees signed Martinez out of the Dominican Republic in January 2024. He was assigned to the Dominican Summer League in both ’24 and this year, with solid results. After hitting .278 with a .386 on-base percentage over 38 games in ’24, he’s added slugging this year, posting a .404/.507/.632 line with four doubles and three homers in 18 games.
