Tarik Skubal isn’t just doing great things on the field; he also has made a tremendous impact as an active member of the Detroit community.
Tarik and his wife, Jessica, remain committed to the Detroit Tigers Foundation and Alternatives for Girls. Alternatives for Girls is an organization that seeks to empower homeless and at-risk young women by providing critical interventions and support.
In 2024, Alternatives for Girls and Full Circle Communities built a 100% affordable housing development, Dr. Maya Angelou Village, to serve individuals and families. The development has a total of 45 units, 23 of which are dedicated solely to Alternatives for Girls. The project provides much-needed high-quality, safe and affordable housing, and includes indoor and outdoor community amenity spaces and case management offices to get residents the services they need to achieve the healthiest outcomes. Tarik and Jessica donated to cover the cost of fully-assembled “Welcome Home Baskets," which included all essential household supplies (bedding, pots and pans, cleaning supplies, etc.) provided to individuals and families as they moved into each of the 23 units.
In 2025, Tarik and Jessica are focusing their efforts on exploring ways to support Alternatives for Girls in opening an early childhood education center at the Dr. Maya Angelou Village, further supporting domestic violence survivors and their children who live there.
“Tarik Skubal and his wife, Jessica, have shown a deep commitment to the mission of Alternatives for Girls and to the girls and women we serve in Detroit,” said Tonya Adair, CEO of Alternatives for Girls. “We rely on dedicated community partners like the Skubals, whose support directly drives our ability to change lives, helping those at risk or who have experienced trauma from homelessness, violence or exploitation move from crisis to safety, stability and self-sufficiency. Their support is a powerful reminder of what’s possible when the community stands behind girls and women on their path forward.”
Prior to 2025, Tarik made an unrestricted donation to the Tigers Foundation, which has awarded more than $26 million in grants, Tigers tickets and college scholarships since its inception in 2005. For a fifth consecutive year (2021-25), Tarik is also involved in the Tigers Autograph for a Cause program. His Autograph for a Cause cards benefit the Detroit Tigers Foundation and the Little League program in his hometown of Kingman, Ariz.
Tarik Skubal exemplifies all of the qualities of a nominee for the Roberto Clemente Award through his extraordinary character, community involvement, philanthropy and positive contributions, both on and off the field.
