A's send Andujar to Reds to net right-handed prospect Huggins

August 1st, 2025

WEST SACRAMENTO -- After making waves earlier in the day with one of the more high-profile trades of 2025 by sending closer Mason Miller and left-hander JP Sears to the Padres in exchange for a package headlined by MLB No. 3 prospect Leo De Vries, the Athletics struck one more deal before the final whistle.

Just before Thursday’s 3 p.m. PT Trade Deadline, the A’s sent infielder/outfielder to the Reds for right-hander .

Huggins, a fourth-round pick by the Reds in the 2022 MLB Draft, ranked as Cincinnati’s No. 22 prospect, according to MLB Pipeline. The 22-year-old right-hander features a solid three-pitch mix that includes a fastball that can touch 97 mph, a hard slider in the 86-91 mph range and a changeup. That arsenal has led to a 33 percent miss rate this season at Single-A Daytona, where he posted a 3.69 ERA in 18 games (15 starts) with 57 strikeouts and 26 walks over 63 1/3 innings.

TRADE DETAILS
A’s get: RHP Kenya Huggins
Reds get: INF/OF Miguel Andujar

“Kenya Huggins is someone we’ve talked about since the [2022] Draft,” A’s general manager David Forst said. “Big guy. He’s 6-foot-3 coming off Tommy John surgery, so he’s had a bit of a limited workload this season. But he’s back up to the velocity he had before the surgery. … We’ll keep him as a starter and he’ll go into the rotation at [High-A Lansing].”

Andujar, 30, was claimed off waivers by the A’s before the 2024 season and has since revitalized his career. The veteran slugged a pair of home runs off Mariners All-Star Bryan Woo on Wednesday night and is batting .298 on the year with a .765 OPS.

Given that Andujar will become a free agent at the end of the season, and the A’s already possessing a surplus of infielders and outfielders both in the Majors and at Triple-A Las Vegas, the A’s felt it was prudent to try to get something in return.

“The Reds had been asking us about Miguel for a couple of days,” Forst said. “Miggy’s been great for us for two years. He’s a great guy to have in the clubhouse. We will miss having him there. But it made sense with him being a free agent to try and capitalize on that.”

With Andujar gone, super utility man Max Schuemann is likely to get the majority of reps at third base going forward. Rookie Max Muncy, currently sidelined with a finger injury, would likely take over at third base once he returns later this season.
