Like father, like son: Druw Jones makes must-see HR robbery

Druw Jones doesn’t just share a name with his 10-time Gold Glove Award-winning father, Andruw, he also shares a penchant for making highlight-reel plays.

In the top of the third inning of High-A Hillsboro’s series opener against Eugene on Tuesday night, the younger Jones gave fans the ultimate “like father, like son” reminder, scaling the center-field wall and making a leaping home run robbery up against the batters’ eye at Hillsboro Ballpark.

The jump-and-grab, which resembled the iconic Air Jordan “Jumpman” logo, likely stole a solo big fly away from Emeralds outfielder James Tibbs (SF No. 4).

Can’t-miss catches may be built into the Jones’ DNA (Druw made an unbelievable one-handed over-the-shoulder grab in his first game as a pro), but that doesn’t make them any less exciting for the D-backs' No. 7 prospect. After securing the ball and landing on his feet, Jones’ face lit up as he celebrated with right fielder Angel Ortiz. The 2022 No. 2 overall pick then tipped his cap toward starting pitcher Daniel Nunez before a little more fist-pumping to round out the sequence.

Jones’ ability to run down balls in the outfield has developed into one of his top tools. Graded by MLB Pipeline as a 70, it is tied with the Georgia native's run tool as his top attribute.

The 21-year-old might not yet have enough footage of spectacular catches to support a video of feature-film length like his father, but his own eye-popping play catalog is starting to take shape.
