May 5, 1938

RHP Hal Kelleher allows a league-record 12 runs (10 hits, 3 walks) in the eighth inning of a 21-2 loss at Wrigley Field. The losing pitcher is Wayne LaMaster, who left the game in the first inning with an injury after three pitches to the Cubs’ leadoff hitter. The Cubs would go on to score four times in the inning.

C Carlos Ruiz makes his major league debut in a 4-1 win over the Giants at Citizens Bank Park.

May 6, 2011

LHP Cliff Lee matches the club record for a left-hander with 16 strikeouts, but the Phillies fall to the Braves, 5-0, at Citizens Bank Park.

Larry Andersen is born in Portland, Ore.

May 7, 1975

Dick Allen and Johnny Oates are acquired from Atlanta for Jim Essian, Barry Bonnell and $150,000.

May 7, 1998

The Phillies record a 4-1 win at Veterans Stadium in their first ever game against the expansion Arizona Diamondbacks.

May 7, 2010

LHP Jamie Moyer becomes the oldest pitcher to toss a shutout (47 years, 170 days) with a 7-0 win over the Atlanta Braves at Citizens Bank Park. Moyer gives up two hits with five strikeouts and no walks.

May 8, 1907

RHP George McQuillan makes his major league debut in relief, allowing no runs in a loss to St. Louis. He goes on to record 24.0 straight scoreless innings to start his career, a record that will stand for more than 100 years.

Longtime Phillies executive David Montgomery passes away following a courageous five-year battle against cancer.

LHP Steve Carlton establishes a club mark by striking out seven consecutive batters in a 9-6 win over the San Diego Padres at Veterans Stadium. The record will stand for 40 years.

May 9, 1992

RF Dale Murphy hits his 398th and final major league home run as the Phillies lose to San Diego, 5-1.

May 9, 1993

Mariano Duncan’s eighth-inning grand slam off future Hall of Famer Lee Smith gives the Phillies a 6-5 Mother’s Day win and a three-game sweep of the St. Louis Cardinals at the Vet.

May 10, 2022

With RHP Jeurys Familia’s punch-out of Mariners CF Julio Rodríguez in the seventh inning, the Phillies become the fourth franchise in MLB history to record 100,000 strikeouts, joining the Cubs, Dodgers and Giants.

May 11, 1947

A crowd of 40,952, the largest to see a baseball game in Philadelphia to that point, watches the Phillies sweep a pair from Brooklyn, 7-3 and 5-4, at Shibe Park.

May 11, 1980

1B Pete Rose becomes the second Phillie in franchise history to steal second, third and home in the same inning as the Phils top the Reds in Cincinnati, 7-3.

May 11, 2006

CF Aaron Rowand breaks his nose crashing into the center field fence at Citizens Bank Park to make a spectacular first-inning catch with the bases loaded and two out. The Phillies go on to beat the New York Mets, 2-0, in a game halted in the bottom of the fifth by rain.
