Looking unnatural in Dodger blue, all-time hits leader Jimmy Rollins makes his first appearance as a visitor at Citizens Bank Park and goes 2-for-5 with a double.

Hall of Famers Pat Gillick and Roy Halladay are inducted into the Phillies Wall of Fame.

August 4, 2023

Fans at Citizens Bank Park give a standing ovation to struggling shortstop Trea Turner, kicking off a 20-game home hitting streak during which he bats .425 with eight home runs and 25 RBI.

August 5, 1921

KDKA in Pittsburgh carries the first radio broadcast of a major league game, an 8-5 Pirates win over the Phillies at Forbes Field. Harold Arlin is the play-by-play announcer. His grandson, Steve, will be the Phillies’ first-round selection in the secondary phase of the June 1966 draft.

August 5, 1927

RF Cy Williams hits for the cycle and drives in six runs as the Phillies beat Pittsburgh, 9-7, at Forbes Field.

August 5, 1975

The Phillies set a major league record by getting eight hits in a row at the start of the first inning (four singles, two doubles, two homers) in a 13-5 rout of Chicago at the Vet. The 10-run outburst is the Phillies’ biggest first inning since 1948.

August 5, 1977

Danny Ozark notches his 400th career managerial victory after a seven-run eighth inning lifts the Phillies to an 8-3 win over Los Angeles and into first place in the NL East.

August 5, 2002

RHP Brandon Duckworth sets a club mark by striking out the first six batters of the game. The Phils rally to beat the Dodgers, 9-7, thanks to consecutive hit batters with the bases loaded in the bottom of the eighth.

Catcher Bob Boone is inducted into the Phillies Wall of Fame.

August 5, 2012

Ryan Howard’s ninth-inning RBI single secures a 5-4 win over the Diamondbacks in the club’s 257th consecutive sellout, a streak that had started on July 7, 2009.

August 5, 2014

Ryan Howard, Chase Utley, and Jimmy Rollins all start in a 2-1, 15-inning win over Houston. It marks the 887th game started by the trio, passing Steve Garvey, Davey Lopes and Bill Russell for most MLB games started by a 1B/2B/SS combo.

Wall of Famer Sherry Magee is born in Clarendon, Pa.

RF Dale Murphy’s walk-off grand slam in the 11th inning delivers a 6-2 decision over the Cubs, the seventh consecutive victory of an eventual 13-game winning streak.

Catcher Darren Daulton is inducted into the Phillies Wall of Fame.

With a start against the San Diego Padres at Petco Park, RHP Jake Thompson becomes the 2,000th player to appear in a game for the Phillies in franchise history.

The Phils top the Cubs in 11 innings, 5-4, as LHP Mitch Williams earns the win for the third consecutive game, tying a club and major league mark for relief pitchers.

Left-handed reliever and future world champion Scott Eyre is acquired from the Chicago Cubs for Brian Schlitter.

Beloved broadcaster Harry Kalas is inducted posthumously into the Phillies Wall of Fame.

Kyle Schwarber ties career highs with three home runs and seven RBI in a 9-4 win at Dodger Stadium. He and Bryce Harper become only the second pair of teammates in franchise history with a three-homer game in the same season, joining Chuck Klein and Johnny Moore in 1936.

August 8, 1903

Twelve fans die and 232 are injured when a balcony collapses at Philadelphia Park during a doubleheader against the Boston Braves. Following 10 consecutive postponements, August 10-19, the accident forces the Phillies to play 16 games at the Philadelphia Athletics’ Columbia Park.

August 8, 1988

LF Phil Bradley enters the record books, albeit ever so briefly. He leads off the first night game ever at Wrigley Field with a home run, but rain washes out the homer and the game with the Cubs leading 3-1 in the fourth inning.

2B Juan Samuel is inducted into the Phillies Wall of Fame.

The Phillies retire Hall of Famer Roy Halladay’s No. 34. It is the eighth number retired by the club, joining Richie Ashburn (1), Robin Roberts (36), Steve Carlton (32), Mike Schmidt (20), Jim Bunning (14), Jackie Robinson (42), and Dick Allen (15).

August 9, 1955

LF Del Ennis drives in the 1,000th run of his career in a 9-1 win over Pittsburgh at Connie Mack Stadium.

August 9, 1976

RHP Robin Roberts is inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, N.Y. Because of rain, the induction ceremony takes place in The Otesaga Hotel’s small ballroom.

August 9, 1981

Mike Schmidt’s two-run home run in the eighth inning lifts the National League to a 5-4 victory in the latest All-Star Game ever played. He’s joined on Dallas Green’s NL roster by four other members of the reigning World Series champions: LHP Steve Carlton, 1B Pete Rose, RHP Dick Ruthven and 2B Manny Trillo.

Charlie Manuel, the winningest manager in franchise history, is inducted into the Phillies Wall of Fame.

Making just his second start since being acquired from Detroit at the trade deadline, right-handed pitcher Michael Lorenzen tosses the 14th no-hitter in franchise history as the Phillies blank the Nationals, 7-0, at Citizens Bank Park. At the plate, Weston Wilson becomes the fifth Phillie to homer in his first major league plate appearance, and Nick Castellanos hits his 200th career home run.

August 10, 1930

The Phillies tie a club mark for most runs in a shutout game with an 18-0 win at Cincinnati, the first game of a doubleheader sweep.

August 10, 1978

Danny Ozark joins Gene Mauch and Harry Wright as the only Phillies managers with 500 wins as RHP Dick Ruthven posts his fifth straight victory, 3-1, over visiting Pittsburgh.

August 10, 1981

After tying the mark in June in the last game played before a two-month baseball strike, Pete Rose finally becomes the all-time National League hit leader when he singles to the opposite field off Cardinal hurler Mark Littell for his 3,631st hit. The Phillies first baseman is congratulated on the field by Stan Musial, who previously held the mark, in front of 60,561 fans at Veterans Stadium.

LF John Kruk has four hits and ties a club mark with five runs scored in a 16-13 win over the Cubs at Wrigley Field.

Longtime coach John Vukovich is inducted posthumously into the Phillies Wall of Fame.

C Mike Lieberthal is inducted into the Phillies Wall of Fame.

With a 4-3 win over the Miami Marlins at Citizens Bank Park in his 59th game at the helm, Rob Thomson becomes the fastest manager to reach 40 wins in Phillies franchise history.

August 11, 1970

In a 6-5 decision at Houston, RHP Jim Bunning joins Cy Young as the only pitchers to win 100 games in each league.

August 11, 1983

In fan balloting, Mike Schmidt is selected as the club’s all-time greatest player, and players are named to the Centennial Team to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the franchise. The team is comprised of four players from the 1950 Whiz Kids and eight from the 1980 World Series champions, along with manager Dallas Green.

August 11, 1994

The Phillies edge Dallas Green’s New York Mets in 15 innings, 2-1, in what turns out to be the final game of the season as the players go on strike the following day. The season never resumes.

August 11, 2004

LHP Randy Wolf becomes the seventh Phillies pitcher to hit two home runs in a game in a 15-4 win over the Rockies at Citizens Bank Park.

August 11, 2006

World Series-winning manager Dallas Green is inducted into the Phillies Wall of Fame.

August 12, 1987

With his 10th triple, 2B Juan Samuel becomes the first major league player to reach double figures in doubles, triples, homers and stolen bases in his first four big league seasons as the Phillies top visiting Chicago, 13-7. An eighth-inning grand slam is Samuel’s 22nd homer, breaking Granny Hamner’s club record for a second baseman set in 1953.

SS Jimmy Rollins becomes the third Phillies switch-hitter to homer from each side of the plate in a game, joining Steve Jeltz (1989) and Tomas Perez (2001).

LHP Cole Hamels strikes out nine in a complete-game, 5-1 victory at Atlanta to give Charlie Manuel his 1,000th career managerial win, making him the 59th skipper in major league history to reach that plateau.

August 12, 2016

After presenting Jim Thome with his Wall of Fame plaque before the game, 1B Ryan Howard pays homage with a 457-foot grand slam in the Phillies’ 10-6 win over Colorado. RHP Jake Thompson ties a ML record by striking out four batters in the second inning.

August 13, 1948

The Phillies set a major league record by scoring nine runs before making an out when they beat the New York Giants, 12-7, at Shibe Park. Philadelphia sends 14 batters to the plate in the first frame and scores a total of 10 runs to easily erase an early three-run deficit.

August 13, 1972

Between games of a Sunday afternoon doubleheader with Montreal, high-wire artist Karl Wallenda thrills the crowd of over 30,000 by walking across the stadium on a tightrope, the most dazzling promotion in Vet history. He repeats the nerve-wracking feat on May 31, 1976.

August 13, 1992

A game with St. Louis is postponed by rain, the first Veterans Stadium rainout since June 18, 1990, a streak of 189 dates.

August 13, 2020

Alec Bohm makes his major league debut at home against Baltimore. He starts at third base and doubles off Thomas Eshelman in his first plate appearance.

August 14, 1981

3B Mike Schmidt hits his 300th career home run in the third inning off New York’s Mike Scott in an 8-4 victory at Shea Stadium.

August 14, 1982

With his 12,365th trip to the plate, Phillies first baseman Pete Rose passes Hank Aaron to become the all-time leader in career at-bats. MLB’s all-time hit king ends his 24-year tenure in the majors with an amazing total of 14,053 at-bats.

August 14, 1984

2B Juan Samuel steals his 56th base, breaking Sherry Magee’s club record set in 1906, in a 3-2 loss at San Diego.

August 14, 2006

SS Jimmy Rollins’ 18th home run sets a club record for homers by a shortstop, breaking Granny Hamner’s mark set in 1952, as the Phillies crush the Mets, 13-0.

August 14, 2012

Jimmy Rollins celebrates moving past Larry Bowa for the most games played by a Phillies shortstop (1,731) with a leadoff home run off Josh Johnson in a 1-0 win at Miami.

August 15, 1958

Richie Ashburn gets his 2,000th career hit when he singles in the third inning off Milwaukee Braves starter Carlton Willey.

August 15, 1990

LHP Terry Mulholland pitches a 6-0 no-hitter against San Francisco, the first ever at the Vet. It is the eighth no-hitter of the 1990 season, a major league record, and the first no-no of the century by a Phillies pitcher at home.

August 15, 2019

The Phillies win a wild one, 7-5, as RF Bryce Harper hits a walk-off grand slam vs. the Chicago Cubs. It is only the 14th walk-off grand slam in Phillies history and the first since John Mayberry’s on June 4, 2013, vs. Miami.

August 15, 2024

In just his 24th major league game, Weston Wilson hits for the 10th cycle in franchise history, becoming the first rookie to accomplish the feat, in a 13-3 rout of the Nationals at Citizens Bank Park.

August 16, 1925

Wall of Fame third baseman Willie “Puddin’ Head” Jones is born in Dillon, S.C.

August 16, 1963

Manager Rob Thomson is born in Stratford, Ontario, Canada.

August 16, 1968

Dick Allen walks in each of his five plate appearances against San Francisco, setting a single-game club mark and tying a then-National League record.

August 16, 1969

RHP Rick Wise tosses the club’s fourth consecutive shutout, a 7-0 win over Houston, following RHP Jerry Johnson, LHP Woodie Fryman and LHP Grant Jackson.

August 16, 1977

The Phillies extend their longest winning streak of the century to 13 games with a 7-5 decision in Montreal. The club hadn’t won that many in a row since 1892.

A statue of Hall of Fame broadcaster Harry Kalas is unveiled in a pregame ceremony at Citizens Bank Park.

August 16, 2016

In his first game as a visitor at Citizens Bank Park, Chase Utley leads the Dodgers to a 15-5 win with two long standing ovations, two home runs (including a grand slam) and two curtain calls.

August 16, 2022

With an 11-4 victory over the Cincinnati Reds, the Phillies become the ninth team in major league history to win 10,000 games, joining the Giants, Dodgers, Cubs, Cardinals, Braves, Reds, Pirates and Yankees.

August 17, 1894

Collecting a club-record 36 hits, the Phillies crush visiting Louisville, 29-4. Future Hall of Famer Sam Thompson hits for the cycle, with three singles, a double, triple and home run in seven at-bats.

August 17, 1957

CF Richie Ashburn, known for his ability to foul off pitches, hits spectator Alice Roth twice in the same at-bat. The first one breaks her nose; the second hits her on the knee while she is being removed on a stretcher. Ironically, she is the wife of Earl Roth, sports editor of the Philadelphia Bulletin.

August 17, 1972

LHP Steve Carlton wins his 20th game of the season and 15th straight, the longest streak in Phillies history, 9-4 over Cincinnati before a crowd of 53,377 at the Vet. He posted a 1.33 ERA during the streak, which began June 7 and ended August 21.

August 17, 2024

After longtime club executive David Montgomery is posthumously inducted into the Toyota Phillies Wall of Fame, Cristopher Sánchez follows with his second complete game of the season, needing just 99 pitches to complete the feat. It’s the club’s first complete game under 100 pitches since Roy Halladay’s division-clincher in 2010.
