RED SOX PLACE OUTFIELDER WILYER ABREU ON 10-DAY INJURED LIST
BOSTON, MA—The Boston Red Sox today placed outfielder Wilyer Abreu on the 10-Day Injured List (retroactive to August 18) with a right calf strain. To fill his spot, Boston recalled outfielder Jhostynxon Garcia from Triple-A Worcester. He will wear number 51.
Abreu, 26, has hit .253 (89-for-352) with 22 home runs and 69 RBI in 108 games this season. The left-handed hitter has made 90 starts in right field and one as the designated hitter. Originally signed as an international free agent by the Houston Astros in July 2017, the Venezuela native has hit .259 (214-for-827) with 55 doubles, two triples, 39 home runs and 141 RBI over 268 career Major League games, all with the Red Sox (2023-25).
Garcia, 22, is ranked by MLB.com as the Red Sox’ No. 3 prospect and the No. 77 overall prospect. The right-handed hitter has played in 99 games between Double-A Portland (33) and Worcester (66) this season, batting .289 (110-for-381) with 17 doubles, four triples, 20 home runs, 73 RBI and an .875 OPS. He has made 73 starts in center field, 16 in right field, six as the designated hitter, three in left field, and one at first base. Singed by the Red Sox as an international free agent in July 2019, the Venezuela native has hit .267 (346-for-1,294) with 249 runs scores, 67 doubles, 21 triples, 54 home runs, and 207 RBI in 355 career minor league games.
