Mariners Select INF Cole Young from Triple-A Tacoma; Reinstate RHP Bryce Miller from the 15-Day Injured List
SEATTLE – Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President & General Manager of Baseball Operations Justin Hollander announced today the following roster moves:
- Cole Young (#2), INF, selected from Triple-A Tacoma.
- Bryce Miller, RHP, reinstated from the 15-day Injured List (right elbow inflammation).
- Leo Rivas, INF, optioned to Triple-A Tacoma (post-game May 30).
- Casey Legumina, RHP, optioned to Triple-A Tacoma (post-game May 30).
- Will Klein, RHP, designated for assignment.
The Mariners 40-man roster remains full at 40 players.
Young, 21, will make his Major League debut when he first appears in a game. He is set to become the youngest Mariners player to make their Major League debut since Julio Rodríguez made his Major League debut on April 8, 2022 (21 years, 100 days). He will also be the 2nd player 21-years-old or younger to make their Major League debut this season, joining Moises Ballesteros-CHC. He will be 1-of-6 to appear in a Major League game before their 22nd birthday this season.
He has appeared in 53 games with Triple-A Tacoma this season, batting .277 (57x206) with 39 runs, 13 doubles, 5 triples, 5 home runs, 26 RBI, 31 walks and 4 stolen bases, getting on base at a .392 clip and slugging .461 (.853 OPS). In 26 games in May, Young is batting .366 (37x101) with 28 runs, 10 doubles, 3 triples, 5 home runs, 21 RBI and 16 walks to just 8 strikeouts, 4 stolen bases, a .467 OBP and slugging .673 (1.140 OPS). He was named Pacific Coast League Player of the Week for May 5-11 after he hit safely in all 6 games he played, batting .455 (10x22) with 8 runs, 3 doubles, 1 triple, 1 home run, 4 RBI and a 1.357 OPS. He is the youngest position player to appear in the Triple-A PCL this season.
The left-handed hitting infielder is a consensus top 100 MLB prospect. He is currently the 3rd ranked Mariners prospect by MLB Pipeline, and No. 43 overall in MLB. He is the 2nd ranked Mariners prospect and 51st overall in MLB by Baseball America, the 3rd ranked Mariners prospect and No. 36 in MLB by The Athletic and the 3rd ranked Mariners prospect and No. 54 overall by Baseball Prospectus.
The 5-foot-11, 180-pounder was selected by the Mariners in the 1st round (21st overall) of the 2022 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of North Allegheny High School (Wexford, PA). He has appeared in 4 minor league seasons (2022-c), batting .279 (343x1230) with 215 runs, 73 doubles, 17 triples, 27 home runs, 159 RBI, 53 stolen bases, getting on base at a .388 clip and slugging .432 (.820 OPS) in 321 games. Young was 1 of 2 Mariners representatives selected to the 2024 MLB All-Star Futures Game at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas (also: Harry Ford) and received the Alvin Davis “Mr. Mariner” Award in 2023 for his exemplary play and leadership skills on and off the field.
Miller, 26, was placed on the 15-day Injured List with right elbow inflammation on May 14 (retroactive to May 12). He is 2-4 with a 5.22 ERA (23 ER, 39.2 IP) with 21 walks and 35 strikeouts in 8 starts this season. The right-hander most recently started on May 11 vs. Toronto, tossing 5.0 innings and allowing 7 runs on 8 hits.
Miller was selected by the Mariners in the 4th round of the 2021 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of Texas A&M University. The right-hander made his MLB debut with Seattle on May 2, 2023 at Oakland, setting the franchise record for most strikeouts (10) in a debut. In 2024, Miller went 12-8 with a 2.94 ERA (59 ER, 180.1 IP) with 45 walks and 171 strikeouts, notching 18 quality starts in his stellar sophomore season.
Rivas, 27, was recalled on April 9 and appeared in 30 games during his stint in the Majors, batting .283 (17x60), 1 double, 4 RBI and 4 stolen bases with a .711 OPS. Rivas was also recalled to the active roster from April 1-3 this season, but did not appear in a game during that stint with the Major League club.
The Maracay, Venezuela native has appeared in parts of 10 minor league seasons in the Angels (2015-19), Reds (2021-22) and Mariners (2022-c) systems. He has also appeared in parts of 2 Major League seasons with Seattle batting .256 (34x60) with 24 runs, 2 doubles, 1 triple, 12 RBI, 7 stolen bases and a .655 OPS in 73 games. The 5-foot-8 150-pound switch hitter made his MLB debut on April 28, 2024 becoming the 4th player in Mariners history to triple in his first career plate appearance.
Legumina (leg-uh-meena), 27, tossed the 10th inning of last night’s game. He has made 20 appearances (1 start) this season, going 4-3 with a 4.58 ERA (10 ER, 19.2 IP), 12 walks and 18 strikeouts.
Legumina has appeared in 3 Major League seasons with Cincinnati (2023-24) and Seattle (2025), going 5-3 with a 5.83 ERA (27 ER, 41.2 IP) in 37 appearances (1 start) with 23 walks and 36 strikeouts. He made his big-league debut on April 15, 2023 vs. the Phillies.
Legumina was acquired by the Mariners from the Cincinnati Reds in exchange for cash considerations on Feb. 3. The 6-foot-2 righty was selected by the Minnesota Twins in the 8th round of the 2019 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of Gonzaga University in Spokane, Washington. Legumina became the 8th Gonzaga product to play for the Mariners, joining Rick Sweet, Casey Parsons, Jason Bay, Cody Martin, Tyler Olson, Wyatt Mills and Marco Gonzales.
Klein, 25, was acquired by the Mariners from the Athletics in exchange for international slot money on Jan. 21, 2025. The right-hander has made 22 appearances with Triple-A Tacoma this season going 2-0 with a 7.17 ERA (17 ER, 21.1 IP).
Klein appeared in 8 Major League games in 2024 between the Kansas City Royals (5 G) and the Athletics (3 G), making his big league debut with Kansas City on April 28, 2024. The 6-foot-5, 230-pound righty was acquired by the A’s, along with two minor leaguers, from Kansas City in exchange for right-handed pitcher Lucas Erceg on July 30, 2024.
The Bloomington, Indiana native was originally selected by the Royals in the 5th round of the 2020 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of Eastern Illinois University. He has made 160 minor league appearances since his professional debut in 2021, and represented the Royals at the 2023 All-Star Futures Game at T-Mobile Park in Seattle.
