Colorado Rockies Acquire Minor League Pitchers Griffin Herring and Josh Grosz from New York Yankees in exchange for Third Baseman Ryan McMahon

DENVER – The Colorado Rockies announced today that they have acquired left-handed pitcher Griffin Herring and right-handed pitcher Josh Grosz via trade with the New York Yankees in exchange for third baseman Ryan McMahon.

“While it is never easy to part ways with a player and person of Ryan’s caliber, our focus at this deadline is to build for a competitive future,” said Senior Vice President and General Manager Bill Schmidt. “We’re excited to welcome Griffin and Josh to the organization. They’re both highly talented young pitchers with the potential to make a meaningful impact at the Major League level in the near future.

Herring, 22, has gone 7-3 with a 1.71 ERA (89.1 IP, 17 ER), 36 walks and 102 strikeouts in 16 starts between Single-A Tampa and High-A Hudson Valley this season, the second-lowest ERA in the Minor Leagues among qualified full season pitchers … ranks tied for fifth among all Minor League pitchers with a .178 opponent average … has gone 3-2 with a 2.22 ERA (44.2 IP, 11 ER) in eight starts with Hudson Valley since his promotion in late May … the Grapevine, Texas native did not pitch professionally in 2024 after being selected by New York-AL in the sixth round of the 2024 First-Year Player Draft out of Louisiana State University … was selected as a sophomore out of LSU, where he went 11-3 with a 2.66 ERA in 39 relief appearances (one start) across the 2023 and 2024 seasons … helped lead LSU to a national title in 2023, going 5-2 with a 3.93 ERA in 18 relief appearances as a freshman … ranked by MLB Pipeline as the Yankees’ #8 overall prospect.

Grosz, 22, has gone 4-8 with a 4.14 ERA (87.0 IP, 40 ER), 35 walks and 94 strikeouts in 16 appearances (15 starts) with High-A Hudson Valley … ranks among South Atlantic League leaders in strikeouts (T-3rd), innings pitched (4th), opponent average (.211, 5th), WHIP (1.16, 7th) and ERA (9th) … originally selected by New York-AL in the 11th round of the 2023 First-Year Player Draft out of East Carolina University where he was teammates with current Rockies pitcher Zach Agnos … made his professional debut in 2024, going 7-8 with a 3.85 ERA (121.2 IP, 52 ER), 52 walks and 131 strikeouts in 24 total appearances (23 starts) between Single-A Tampa, High-A Hudson Valley and Double-A Somerset … the Twentypine Palms, Calif., native is ranked by MLB Pipeline as the Yankees’ #21 overall prospect.

McMahon, 30, has slashed .217/.314/.403 with 15 doubles, one triple, 16 home runs and 35 RBI in 100 games with the Rockies in 2025 … made his Major League debut for the Rockies in 2017 after being selected by Colorado in the second round of the 2013 First-Year Player Draft out of Mater Dei High School in Santa Ana, Calif. … in parts of nine Major League seasons with the Rockies, slashed .240/.323/.420 with 449 runs scored, 812 hits, 167 doubles, 11 triples, 140 home runs and 452 RBI … ranks among franchise leaders in games played (9th), doubles (11th), home runs (11th), hits (12th), runs scored (13th) and RBI (13th) … named a finalist for the National League Rawlings Gold Glove Award at third base each of the last four seasons (2021-24) … named to his first career All-Star team in 2024.

The Rockies have 39 players on the 40-man roster.
