July 31: Yanks bolster bullpen with slew of Deadline deals
The Yankees made some serious additions to their bullpen ahead of the Trade Deadline, dipping into the National League to acquire two established closers and a third key reliever. New York began Deadline day by making a deal with the Pirates, acquiring closer David Bednar for three prospects, including catchers Rafael Flores (the Yankees’ No. 8 prospect) and Edgleen Pérez (No. 14). The Yankees sent four prospects to San Francisco for righty closer Camilo Doval, and their No. 10 prospect Roc Riggio was the main piece in a trade for Rockies reliever Jake Bird.

New York also acquired speedy infielder José Caballero from the Rays during Thursday’s game against Tampa Bay, which meant a quick walk to the opposite clubhouse at Yankee Stadium for Caballero. With Gerrit Cole and Clarke Schmidt out for the season, the Yankees tried to add to their starting rotation but weren’t able to. Still, they’re happy with the upgrades they made ahead of the Deadline, which included third baseman Ryan McMahon, infielder Amed Rosario and outfielder Austin Slater. “I know we're better today than we were yesterday, so mission accomplished there,” general manager Brian Cashman said.
