NEW YORK -- The Yankees have come to look forward to Ryan Yarbrough's starts during the early portion of this season, entertained by how the left-hander's throwback style tends to confound opposing lineups.
They'll be waiting a bit for the next outing. Yarbrough was placed on the 15-day injured list Sunday (retroactive to June 20) with what manager Aaron Boone described as a "low-grade" right oblique strain.
Boone said there is no timetable for Yarbrough's return, but a conservative estimate could be about a month.
"Hopefully it's not something that keeps him down from throwing for too long," Boone said.
Yarbrough has been experiencing discomfort since a June 13 outing at Boston, according to Boone. In 16 games (eight starts), Yarbrough has pitched to a 3.90 ERA; as a starter, Yarbrough is 3-1 with a 3.83 ERA.
The Yankees recalled left-hander Jayvien Sandridge from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre for Sunday's game. They plan to promote right-hander Allan Winans from Triple-A for Monday's start.
Winans, 29, has previously pitched in the big leagues with the Braves (7.20 ERA in eight starts from 2023-24). He will be making his Yankees debut at Cincinnati.

He has been a standout in Triple-A this season, posting a 7-0 record and a 0.90 ERA across 11 games (nine starts). Winans' seven wins are tied for the International League lead.
"He's been tremendous," Boone said. "To be this deep into the season and [be] a starting pitcher with a sub-1.00 [ERA], it's been really excellent. So hopefully he'll bring some of that up here with us."
More starting pitching help could be on the way. Right-hander Marcus Stroman has pitched in two Minor League rehab games with Double-A Somerset and is scheduled to make another start on Tuesday; Boone said Stroman is scheduled to throw about 70 pitches "and then will be in the mix."

Right-hander JT Brubaker, who made his Yankees debut with two scoreless innings in relief on Saturday, was built up to 70 pitches in Triple-A. Boone said Brubaker is currently slotted as the long reliever.
