Forget Montagues and Capulets, this approximate sonnet of words is for Sanabria.
We've seen a lot of incredible bat flips over the years. But not like the one Romeo Sanabria gave us upon launching a walk-off homer to lift the San Antonio Missions to a 2-1 victory over the Frisco RoughRiders on Saturday night.
Sanabria, the Padres' No. 17 prospect per MLB Pipeline, represented Double-A San Antonio's last hope with the club down to its final out and trailing, 1-0. And then he connected for a two-run shot that sent the home crowd into a frenzy and his teammates pouring out of the dugout in celebration.
As all of that was happening, Sanabria watched the flight of his game-winning shot and began twirling his bat in something more reminiscent of a nunchaku demonstration than a prelude to a bat flip. Following the impressive twirls of the bat, he flipped it behind his back toward the home dugout and began his triumphant trot around the bases.
One thing is for certain: in the case of Sanabria and the baseball he sent into the Texas night, parting was anything but sweet sorrow.
