Here’s our weekly look at 10 mind-blowing notes from the last week in baseball (June 27-July 3).
Sonny days: Sonny Gray threw a shutout on just 89 pitches on Friday. That’s the fewest pitches in a Maddux (shutout on fewer than 100 pitches) since 88 by Adam Wainwright on Aug. 11, 2021. And 11 strikeouts were the most in a sub-90 pitch Maddux since pitch counts have been tracked (since 1988). The only other shutout on fewer than 90 pitches with even 10 strikeouts was David Cone’s perfect game on July 18, 1999.

Bucco power: The Pirates swept a weekend series from the Mets in decisive fashion, winning each game by at least seven runs. It was the third time in franchise history the Pirates won every game of a series by at least seven runs, according to the Elias Sports Bureau. They also did so May 13-15, 1935 at Philadelphia and May 29-30, 1893 vs Baltimore.

All rise: Aaron Judge hit his 30th home run of the season on Sunday. This is the fourth time Judge has hit at least 30 homers in a season before the All-Star break. That ties Mark McGwire for the most seasons with 30+ HR before the All-Star break (the 1st ASG was 1933).

Walk this way: James Wood was intentionally walked four times on Sunday. He’s just the sixth different player to receive at least four intentional free passes in a game since IBB have been officially tracked (1955). He joined Barry Bonds in 2004 (four games), Manny Ramirez in 2001, Andre Dawson in 1990, Garry Templeton in 1985 and Roger Maris in 1962.

Terrific Tarik: Sunday was the ninth time Tarik Skubal has had at least five strikeouts through two innings in a game in his career. That’s two more such games than any other Tigers pitcher since the mound was lowered (1969). He ended the night with 13 strikeouts. That’s his third career game with at least 13 strikeouts, tying Jim Bunning for fourth-most in Tigers history. He trails only Mickey Lolich (13), Justin Verlander (five) and Max Scherzer (four).

Where there’s a Wil(yer), there’s a way: Wilyer Abreu had a multi-homer game on Monday in a particularly unique fashion. He hit an inside-the-park home run, then hit a grand slam into the stands later in the game. Abreu became the sixth player to hit an inside-the-park home run and a grand slam (separately) in a game, per Elias. He joined Roger Maris (8/3/58), Jim Tabor (7/4/39), Charlie Gehringer (8/4/30), Everett Scott (7/4/1923) and Jocko Fields (6/5/1890).

Shotime: Shohei Ohtani hit his 30th home run of the season on Tuesday. It’s the fourth time he’s hit at least 30 homers in a season where he made multiple pitching starts, also doing so each year from 2021-23. No other player in MLB history has had even one season where he hit at least 30 longballs and made multiple starts on the mound. His 30th was a marvel -- 116.3 mph off the bat at a 42-degree launch angle. That’s the hardest-hit home run with at least a 36-degree launch angle under Statcast (2015).

This is 30: With Cal Raleigh, Judge and Ohtani, this the fifth season where at least three players reached 30 homers before the All-Star break. It also happened in 2019 (Pete Alonso, Cody Bellinger, Christian Yelich), 1998 (McGwire, Sammy Sosa, Ken Griffey Jr., Greg Vaughn), 1994 (Griffey, Frank Thomas, Matt Williams) and 1969 (Reggie Jackson, Willie McCovey, Frank Howard).

3,000: Clayton Kershaw reached 3,000 career strikeouts on Wednesday, the 20th member of the exclusive club. Kershaw joined Walter Johnson (Senators) and Bob Gibson (Cardinals) as the only pitchers with at least 3,000 career strikeouts all for one team. He’s the fourth left-handed pitcher with at least 3,000 strikeouts, joining Randy Johnson, Steve Carlton and CC Sabathia.

Current Ironman: Matt Olson has played 706 consecutive games entering Friday, dating to May 2, 2021. There have been only seven other streaks of at least 600 to begin in the divisional era (1969), per Elias. They belong to Cal Ripken Jr. from 1982-98 (2,632 consecutive games), Steve Garvey from 1975-83 (1,207), Miguel Tejada from 2000-07 (1,152), Pete Rose from 1978-83 (745), Dale Murphy from 1981-86 (740), Rose from 1973-78 (678) and Sandy Alomar Sr. from 1969-73 (661).
