July 31: Mets cap four-player haul with Mullins trade
The Mets have themselves a new-look bullpen and a new center fielder just in time for the pennant race.

A few hours before the Deadline, the Mets addressed one of their biggest areas of need, trading for Orioles center fielder Cedric Mullins. Entering play on Thursday, New York’s center fielders had produced just a .602 OPS this season, fourth worst in the Majors. The Mets had also been linked to White Sox center fielder Luis Robert Jr. -- who ultimately stayed put -- but evidently pivoted to Mullins, a standout defender with a .738 OPS.

The bullpen overhaul began last week with the acquisition of left-hander Gregory Soto -- the first of two trades with the Orioles. On Wednesday, the Mets added two significant pieces, first sending a three-player package to the Giants for right-hander Tyler Rogers. Known best for his unorthodox delivery, Rogers is one of the game's more reliable relievers, pitching to a 1.80 ERA in 53 games this season. Later in the evening, New York sent three prospects to St. Louis for flame-throwing closer Ryan Helsley. Helsley, who has a 3.00 ERA with 41 strikeouts in 36 innings, should slot in as the setup man ahead of Edwin Diaz.

Ultimately, the Mets kept their starting rotation intact, despite reports that they were “aggressively” pursuing starting pitching as late as Thursday. On top of that, New York held onto its glut of young Major League infielders, like Mark Vientos, whose name had been discussed in trade talks, per reports. That leaves the familiar logjam of Vientos, Brett Baty, and Ronny Mauricio vying for playing time heading into the season's final stretch.
