MINNEAPOLIS -- Twins outfielder Matt Wallner continues to progress in his recovery from his strained left hamstring. Wallner said that Friday marked the first time in his rehab progression that he has made turns while running, though he’s not yet running the bases.

That’s a noteworthy step, though it means he’s still a ways off from being able to go on a rehab assignment. Wallner said that he was not scheduled to run on Saturday but will go again on Sunday. He explained that he’s no longer feeling pain in his leg but he’s not yet at the point of feeling nothing at all.

“I mean, if I’m trying to stretch it out, I could still feel it,” he said, “but nothing painful-wise in a good bit.”

Wallner is able to participate in other baseball activities, including hitting, which is also a step forward after he was completely shut down soon after the injury. The Twins estimated at the beginning of May that he would likely not play before the end of the month.

As for the incremental steps between now and getting into games, Wallner said he’s not looking ahead at all.

“I don’t know,” he said. “I show up every day, and they tell me. I’m assuming running tomorrow, but nothing today, and then go from there.”
