ST. LOUIS -- The Athletics activated Luis Severino from the 15-day injured list, recalled Max Schuemann and selected Scott McGough from Triple-A Las Vegas before kicking off a three-game series against the Cardinals on Monday.

Severino went on the IL on Aug. 6 with a left oblique strain. The right-hander will get the start on Tuesday, when he's activated. Severino, the A’s Opening Day starter, is 6-11 with a 4.82 ERA this season and was pitching well before his injury, going 4-1 with a 2.93 ERA in his last five starts.

“He had a three-up live BP with up to 50 pitches, so I'm assuming we can take him, you know, in the 75 range and see how he feels,” A’s manager Mark Kotsay said. “But it's good to have him back. He's obviously a big part of this and a big part of our future here, and you know, to see him be able to finish this season is a big plus.”

Schuemann, a utility player who has appeared in games at every position except pitcher, catcher and first base, returns after being optioned on Aug. 22. He is hitting .200 with two home runs and 12 RBIs in 90 games.

McGough signed a Minor League contract with the A’s on June 24 after being designated for assignment by Arizona. The 35-year-old right-hander went 4-0 with one save in 16 games for the Aviators.

“He's got a fresh arm,” Kotsay said. “He hasn't thrown in a few days, so, you know, we'll look to get him in and he's been here, he's done it. He's a professional, so there's no worry about bringing him in a big situation.”

In a corresponding move, right-handed pitcher Eduarniel Nuñez was optioned to Las Vegas and left-handed pitcher Ben Bowden was transferred to the 60-day injured list.
