CLEVELAND -- Guardians outfielder Will Brennan and reliever Andrew Walters are each scheduled to undergo surgery on Monday, manager Stephen Vogt noted on Sunday. Brennan will undergo left elbow surgery with Dr. Keith Meister, and Walters will undergo right lat surgery with Dr. Anthony Romeo.

Brennan landed on the 10-day IL due to left forearm inflammation on May 22, and he received a second opinion from Meister on Thursday. Brennan felt the forearm issue on throws to home plate against the Reds on May 16 and on May 21, in the resumption of the Guardians’ suspended May 19 game against the Twins.

Brennan was a late roster cut in Spring Training; he was optioned to Triple-A Columbus on March 24. Cleveland recalled him on May 12, and he went 1-for-11 over six games in the big leagues.

Walters went on the 15-day IL on May 31, after he suffered the lat injury while throwing a pitch to Mike Trout in the ninth inning of the Guardians’ 4-1 loss to the Angels a day prior. He exited that outing in clear discomfort.

Walters previously dealt with right shoulder stiffness in Spring Training, and he was on the 7-day IL in the Minors from April 21-May 10 with right elbow inflammation. He made two big league appearances after recording a 1.50 ERA in 12 innings over 12 outings with Columbus

“It's awful. You never want to see anybody get hurt,” Vogt said. “For Andrew, he’s had a tough spring. He had the setback in Triple-A and he was completely healthy, ready to go. And then he has this fluke one-time injury. And for Will, the elbow, he feels it on one throw, and then he feels it on the second throw. And then all of a sudden, you're going to have surgery.

“We feel for both of them. Our thoughts are with them, but we know they're going to come back, they're going to put the work in and be ready to go whenever that timetable does come.”
