With Rushing (right leg) sidelined, Dodgers to add another catcher

BALTIMORE -- The Dodgers appear likely to make another roster move behind the plate after rookie catcher and first baseman Dalton Rushing departed in the sixth inning of Friday’s 2-1 loss vs. the Orioles.

Rushing fouled the ball off the inside of his right knee and immediately crumpled to the ground after his swing. He hobbled off on one leg with his arms over the shoulders of manager Dave Roberts and a team medical staff member. The backstop was then seen wearing crutches after the game.

The Dodgers said Rushing exited the game with a right lower leg contusion. Roberts said postgame that initial X-rays were negative, but that Rushing would undergo a CT scan on Saturday morning.

Pinch-hitter Alex Call completed a strikeout in the at-bat Rushing started. Ben Rortvedt -- who was recalled from Triple-A Oklahoma City on Thursday -- assumed the catching duties in the bottom of the frame.

“Ben will catch tomorrow,” Roberts said. “We’re going to bring another catcher, just to see if there’s a potential IL for Dalton.”

The Dodgers are already carrying three catchers at the moment, but among them, three-time All-Star Will Smith is day to day with a right hand contusion and has missed the last two games.

Roberts indicated postgame that Smith wouldn’t play until at least Sunday, but a more likely timetable might be sometime during the Dodgers’ home set against the Rockies beginning Monday.

“He hasn’t picked up a bat yet, so tomorrow is certainly not in play,” Roberts said of Smith. “Sunday, it’s day to day, and you don’t want to count him out. But you also have to give him a chance to have some success.”

Rushing is slashing .190/.254/.298 in 45 games. He has caught in 35 of those, including 33 starts.
