July 31: Cubs cap Deadline with deals for former All-Stars
The Cubs made four moderate moves before the Trade Deadline, though many observers had assumed they'd make a bigger splash.
They traded Thursday with the Twins for super-utility man and former All-Star Willi Castro and with the Pirates for lefty reliever and former All-Star Taylor Rogers. The Cubs sent Double-A pitching prospects Ryan Gallagher (No. 8 on Pipeline’s Top 30 list for Chicago) and Sam Armstrong to the Twins for Castro. Outfield prospect Ivan Brethowr went to the Pirates for Rogers.
The deals followed acquisitions of right-handers Michael Soroka (from the Nationals) and Andrew Kittredge (from the Orioles) on Wednesday. The moves helped address Chicago’s need for pitching depth and bolstered the bench.
Chicago had been among the suitors for big-name starting pitchers, having reportedly been after Cleveland righty Shane Bieber, who ended up being traded to the Blue Jays. The Cubs had also been linked to other potential options, including Zac Gallen, Sandy Alcantara, Dylan Cease and MacKenzie Gore, none of whom ended up being dealt, as well as Merrill Kelly, who was traded to the Rangers.
