X-rays negative, D-backs hope Carroll's HBP on left hand a 'pain tolerance-type thing'

TORONTO -- Diamondbacks fans can breathe a collective sigh of relief after X-rays taken of outfielder Corbin Carroll's left hand after a hit-by-pitch on Wednesday night came back negative.
Carroll was struck on the hand by a 91.4 mph sinker from left-hander Justin Bruihl in the eighth inning of Arizona’s 8-1 loss to the Blue Jays. Carroll stayed in the game to run the bases, but exited after the inning was over.
"The X-rays were negative, so that’s positive news,” Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said.
There hasn’t been a lot of positive news when it comes to injuries for the Diamondbacks this year with ace Corbin Burnes and closer Justin Martinez both needing Tommy John surgery and lefty reliever A.J. Puk seeking a second opinion on his ailing elbow.
With Carroll, though, it seems the team may have avoided a serious injury -- if not serious pain.
"He threw me some front-hip sliders and then threw a sinker off of it,” Carroll said of Bruihl. “Two strikes, you've kind of got to stay in there, and it just squared me up pretty good.”

Carroll was checked out by the team’s medical staff and Lovullo before staying in the game to run. At the end of the inning, though, he realized the prudent move was to come out.
“We’ve got plenty of great outfielders, so it was an easy call to come out,” Carroll said.
Whether or not Carroll misses any time will depend, in part, on how he feels when he wakes up Thursday morning.
"Fingers crossed that it’s good enough to go tomorrow, but we’ll see,” Carroll said. “That's kind of always the thing with something like this -- it’s not really a risk for further injury, it’s just a pain tolerance-type thing.”
Hand injuries can be tricky. The Diamondbacks have learned that recently with catcher Gabriel Moreno, who was struck on the hand on June 6 during the team’s series in Cincinnati.
X-rays were negative and while Moreno has played since then, he has been out the last several games because he’s been experiencing soreness in the hand.
