CINCINNATI -- The Reds traded catcher Austin Wynns to the Athletics on Sunday for cash considerations.

On Friday, Wynns was designated for assignment when Christian Encarnacion-Strand was reinstated from the IL.

Reds get: Cash considerations
Athletics get: C Austin Wynns

The Reds have carried three catchers on the roster since Tyler Stephenson returned from the IL on May 2 because of concerns that Wynns could get claimed off waivers with a roster move.

Wynns batted .400 with a 1.142 OPS, three homers and 11 RBIs in 18 games, but he hadn’t started a game since May 6 and made only four plate appearances since.

“The guy deserves to be in the Major Leagues,” Reds manager Terry Francona said Friday. “He handled a really [crappy] thing really well.”

Wynns was DFA’d partly due to Elly De La Cruz choosing not to be placed on the bereavement list following the death of his older sister, Genelis, on Saturday.

Wynns, 34, is back in the American League, where he began his career as a 10th-round Draft pick by Baltimore in 2013. He spent three seasons with the Orioles, then had stints with the Giants, Dodgers and Rockies before signing a Minor League deal with the Reds in January.
