García (quad strain) lands back on IL after just 9 games

ARLINGTON -- It’s been one step forward and two steps back with the Rangers’ injuries lately.

Adolis García returned from the injured list on Aug. 23 in the midst of the club losing another eight contributors in the span of 10 days. One of those contributors -- Jake Burger -- returned from his own IL stint on Sept. 1, making Texas as healthy as possible for the moment.

But days later, García found himself on the injured list again, this time with a Grade 2 right quad strain, manager Bruce Bochy announced ahead of Friday's game against the Astros.

García exited a Sept. 1 win in Arizona after hustling down the line to beat out a double-play ball. He initially stayed in the game to run and scored, but was removed for defending the following frame. At the time, the Rangers were willing to wait it out.

On Friday, though, they ultimately decided to place García on the injured list, retroactive to Sept.1, calling up rookie outfielder Dustin Harris in his place.

“We had three days to work with, and that's when we felt like we were covered without needing another guy,” Bochy said. “Now it's at a point where we need to go ahead and put him on and give him his 10 days. He'll be pretty close then, I think. I can't say for sure whether he’ll be able to go out to right field. I think he could be able to swing the bat.”

García’s bat has struggled for much of the 2025 season, but in nine games since coming off the injured list, he slashed .368/.400/.632 with two homers, four doubles and nine RBIs. Across the entire season, he’s hit .235 with a .685 OPS, and despite some struggles, he’s collected 18 home runs, 28 doubles and 73 RBIs over 125 games. He’s led the club in doubles, RBIs and extra-base hits (46).

It’s yet another unfortunate injury for the Rangers in the middle of the most important stretch of the season.

Texas (72-69) entered Friday in third place in the AL West standings, 5 games back of first-place Houston (77-64) and 1 1/2 games back of second-place Seattle (73-67). The club also currently sits in fourth place in the AL Wild Card standings, just behind Seattle. The Rangers have gained four games in the Wild Card race over their current 9-3 span (beginning Aug. 22), going from 5 1/2 games back to 1 1/2 games back.

“They're all big at this point,” Bochy said of the games left this season. “We're on the outside looking in right now. So yeah, wins are really important. It doesn't matter who you're playing, but obviously, when you're in your division, they're probably much bigger. We just let these guys keep doing what they're doing. They're playing good baseball. We're taking series. We'll see where we're at.”
