Rangers Select Contracts of 1B Rowdy Tellez and INF Cody Freeman From Triple-A Round Rock

Outfielder Sam Haggerty placed on 10-day Injured List

Arlington, Texas — The Texas Rangers today announced the following transactions prior to Friday night’s series opener against Detroit at Globe Life Field:

  • First baseman Rowdy Tellez (#44) contract selected from Triple-A Round Rock.
  • Infielder Cody Freeman (#39) contract selected from Triple-A Round Rock.
  • Outfielder Sam Haggerty placed on 10-day Injured List (left ankle inflammation), retroactive to July 15.

The 30-year-old Tellez (pronounced ‘teh-LEHZ’) has batted .208 (36-173) with 11 home runs, 6 doubles, and 27 RBI over 62 Major League games this season for Seattle, appearing defensively at first base (59 games/48 starts) and designated hitter (3 starts). Tellez was designated for assignment by the Mariners on June 20 and subsequently released on June 26. Texas signed Tellez to a minor league contract on July 4 and assigned him to Triple-A Round Rock, where the left-handed hitter went 5-for-15 (.333) with 2 home runs, one double, and 4 RBI in 4 games for the Express from July 8-11.

An 8-year Major League veteran, Tellez carries a career .232 batting average and .735 OPS with 116 home runs and 346 RBI over 726 games with Toronto (2018-21), Milwaukee (2021-23), Pittsburgh (2024), and Seattle (2025). Including this season, Tellez has logged 10-or-more home runs in every full campaign (excl. 2020) since 2019. The 6-foot-4, 270-pound Tellez was originally selected by Toronto in the 30th round of the 2013 MLB Draft from Elk Grove (Calif.) H.S. in the greater Sacramento area.

Freeman, 24, has batted .315/.367/.494/.861 (99-314) with 12 home runs, 20 doubles, and 54 RBI over 79 games with Round Rock this season, ranking among Pacific Coast League leaders in batting average (4th), hits (T6th), and total bases (10th, 155). He recently garnered Rangers Minor League Player of the Month honors for June after batting .347 in 23 games during the month, including hits in 21 of those games. The infielder has appeared defensively this season for Round Rock at third base (53 games/51 starts), second base (13 games/12 starts), shortstop (11 games/10 starts), and designated hitter (2 starts). Freeman has never previously appeared on Texas’ Major League roster and his first game appearance will signify his MLB debut.

The Pomona, Calif. native is in his sixth professional season, all with the Texas organization, after he was selected by the Rangers in the 4th round of the 2019 MLB Draft from Etiwanda H.S. in Rancho Cucamonga, Calif. He has compiled a lifetime minor league slash line of .256/.331/.406/.737 (486-1897) slash line with 57 home runs and 289 RBI in 508 games since 2019. Cody is the younger brother of Tyler Freeman, an infielder for the Colorado Rockies.

Haggerty, 31, last appeared for the Rangers on Sunday at Houston as a pinch hitter and designated hitter. In 47 games with Texas since his contract was selected from Triple-A Round Rock, the switch-hitting outfielder has batted .250 (32-128) with 2 home runs, 3 triples, 4 doubles, 11 RBI, 14 walks, 9 stolen bases, 25 runs, and a .704 OPS, making starts in centerfield (10), leftfield (9), designated hitter (5), and rightfield (4). Haggerty holds a career .236 average with 11 home runs, 51 RBI, 42 stolen bases, and 92 runs in 249 games with New York-NL (2019), Seattle (2020-24), and Texas (2025).

With today’s transactions, the Rangers are now at the 40-man limit on the club’s Major League roster, along with four players (Cody Bradford, Jon Gray, Tyler Mahle, Josh Sborz) on the 60-day Injured List.
