Yankees Acquire INF Ryan McMahon

YANKEES ACQUIRE INFIELDER RYAN McMAHON

The New York Yankees today announced that they have acquired infielder Ryan McMahon from the Colorado Rockies in exchange for minor league pitchers Josh Grosz and Griffin Herring.

McMahon, 30, has hit .217/.314/.403 (76-for-350) with 42R, 15 doubles, 1 triple, 16HR, 35RBI, 49BB and 2SB in 100 games with the Rockies this season. His 16HR are the sixth-most among Major League third basemen (min. 50% of games at 3B). According to FanGraphs, he is tied for fourth among Major League third basemen in outs above average (four) this season.

The 2024 All-Star has hit .240/.323/.420 (812-for-3,381) with 449R, 167 doubles, 11 triples, 140HR, 452RBI, 402BB and 30SB in 1,010 career games over parts of nine Major League seasons with Colorado (2017-25). He has hit at least 20 home runs five times in his career (2019, ’21-24).

McMahon has appeared defensively in his career at third base (696G/626GS), second base (244G/203GS), first base (70G/48GS) and shortstop (2G). He has been a National League Rawlings Gold Glove Award finalist at third base for each of the last four seasons (2021-24). Since 2021, he ranks second among Major League third basemen with 54 defensive runs saved and is tied for second with 42 outs above average (FanGraphs).

The left-handed batter is one of only eight Major League players to play in at least 150 games in each of the last four seasons from 2021-24.

The Yorba Linda, Calif., native was originally selected by Colorado in the second round of the 2013 First-Year Player Draft.

Grosz, 22, ha gone 4-8 with a 4.14 ERA (87.0IP, 66H, 46R/40ER, 35BB, 94K, 5HR) in 16 games (15 starts) with High-A Hudson Valley this season. Over parts of two minor league seasons in the Yankees organization (2024-25), the right-handed pitcher has appeared in 40 games (38 starts), going 11-16 with a 3.97 ERA (208.2IP, 167H, 116R/92ER, 87BB, 225K, 19HR). The Twentynine Palms, Calif., native was selected by the Yankees in the 11th round of the 2023 First-Year Player Draft out of East Carolina University (N.C.).

Herring, 22, made his professional debut in 2025 and has gone 7-3 with a 1.71 ERA (89.1IP, 56H, 20R/17ER, 36BB, 102K, 3HR) in 16 combined starts with Single-A Tampa and High-A Hudson Valley. The Grapevine, Tex., native was selected by the Yankees in the sixth round of the 2024 First-Year Player Draft out of Louisiana State University.
