RED SOX REINSTATE INFIELDER MARCELO MAYER FROM BEREAVEMENT LIST
BOSTON, MA—The Boston Red Sox today reinstated infielder Marcelo Mayer from the Bereavement List. To make room, Boston optioned infielder/outfielder Nick Sogard to Triple-A Worcester.
Mayer, 22, has played in 27 games this season, his Major League debut, batting .208 (16-for-77) with three doubles, one triple, and four home runs while making 20 starts at third base and two at second base. Selected by Boston in the first round (No. 4 overall) of the 2021 First-Year Player Draft, the California native has also hit .271 (46-for-170) with 43 RBI in 43 games for Worcester this season.
Sogard, 27, has hit .254 (15-for-59) with five doubles and 10 runs scored in 17 games for Boston this season, making 11 starts at first base, two at second base, and two at third base. The switch-hitter has also played in 45 games for Worcester this season, batting .234 (39-for-167) with 28 runs scored, nine doubles, and three home runs. Originally selected by the Tampa Bay Rays in the 12th round of the 2019 First-Year Player Draft, the California native has batted .265 (36-for-136) in 48 career Major League games, all with the Red Sox (2024-25), making 13 starts at second base, 11 at first base, eight at third base, and six at shortstop.
