Rangers Place DH/1B Joc Pederson On 10-Day Injured List, Select Contract Of Outfielder Alejandro Osuna From Round Rock
Chicago, Ill. — The Texas Rangers today announced the following roster moves prior to Sunday’s road trip finale against the Chicago White Sox at Rate Park:
- DH/1B Joc Pederson placed on 10-day Injured List with a right hand fracture.
- OF Alejandro Osuna (#19) contract selected from Triple-A Round Rock.
- OF Kevin Pillar designated for assignment.
The Rangers will have 25 active players for Sunday’s series finale against the White Sox.
Pederson exited the Rangers’ game on Saturday at Chicago-AL due to the hand injury suffered when he was hit by a pitch in the 4th inning. He remained in the game and scored in that inning, but was lifted for a pinch-hitter in the 5th inning. Pederson has batted .131 with 2 home runs and 6 RBI over 46 games/38 starts for the Rangers this season, including a .216/.431/.432/.864 slash line in his last 17 games/13 starts beginning May 6.
The 22-year-old Osuna will be available for Sunday’s series finale in Chicago, seeking his Major League debut. He has combined to bat .279/.386/.416/.802 (43-154) with 2 home runs, 11 doubles, 2 triples, and 15 RBI over 39 games with Frisco (AA) and Round Rock (AAA) this season. He has combined for 31 runs scored with 21 walks against 29 strikeouts in the minors this season. Osuna posted a 17-game hit streak with Frisco from April 15-May 6, batting .391/.453/.547/1.000 (25-64) in that span with 6 walks and 5 strikeouts. Since a promotion to Round Rock on May 13, Osuna has batted .259 (7-27) with a home run and 9 RBI over 8 games in his first career Triple-A action. The left-handed batter and thrower has played primarily center field this season, but has also seen limited action in left field.
Osuna spent the bulk of Spring Training in Major League camp, batting .429/.523/.714/1.237 (15-35) with one HR, 5 doubles, a triple, and 7 RBI over 24 games in Cactus League play. The Mexico native has a career slash line of .277/.370/.436/.806 with 40 home runs and 201 RBI over 5 professional seasons in the Texas system. The Rangers’ 7th-best prospect according to MLB Pipeline, Osuna was selected as the Rangers’ 2024 Tom Grieve Minor League Player of the Year. He was also tabbed by Baseball America as being the best defensive outfielder and having the best outfield arm in the Rangers organization. He was originally signed by Texas as an international free agent on October 6, 2020.
Pillar has batted .209 with no home runs and 1 RBI over 20 games with the Rangers this season. The Rangers have seven days to trade, release, or outright Pillar to the minor leagues.
With today’s transactions, the Rangers remain at the 40-man limit on the Major League roster, along with three players (Cody Bradford, Jon Gray, Josh Sborz) on the 60-day Injured List.
