Orioles celebrate one-year anniversary of Adopt-A-School partnership at Harlem Park Elementary Middle School

The Orioles today marked the one-year anniversary of their Adopt-A-School partnership with Harlem Park Elementary Middle School by announcing the renovation of a new outdoor classroom. The funding for the classroom was made possible after the 2024 Orioles team voted to gift one playoff share to Harlem Park Elementary Middle School.

Along with a match from the Orioles Charitable Foundation, the Orioles and Heart of America (HOA), a nonprofit organization that transforms learning spaces and helps close resource gaps, are thrilled to unveil the renovated outdoor classroom for Harlem Park students. Complete with a pergola, permanent musical instruments, including a wooden xylophone, drums, and pedestal pipes, clear art easels, a mobile whiteboard, picnic table, and playground benches, this space will offer students a unique and interactive environment to learn and grow in.

As part of the outdoor classroom, the Orioles and HOA also installed two Little Libraries, containing favorite childhood books of various Orioles players, including:

“It’s been an honor to get to know the students and staff from Harlem Park through the different events we’ve had at the school and by having them out to the ballpark,” shared Orioles infielder JORDAN WESTBURG. “My schooling experience played a pivotal role in my growth and journey to get to where I am now, so I’m especially grateful to be able to play a very small part in that for Harlem Park students.”

“We're so proud to collaborate with the Orioles and Harlem Park Elementary Middle School,” shared JILL HARDY HEATH, President & CEO of Heart of America. “The improvements to their outdoor learning space are incredible. My favorite element is the installation of custom outdoor libraries – stocked with Oriole player’s favorite books, no less – making it a special place for kids to learn and grow.”

“On behalf of our HPEMS scholars, staff, families, and myself, I extend our deepest gratitude to the Orioles franchise, the Orioles players, and Heart of America for your generous investment in the social-emotional well-being of our students,” shared Harlem Park Principal VENUS JACKSON. “Through the renovation of our outdoor play space, you are fostering creativity, activating physical fitness, and creating a vibrant community space where children can connect and grow. Your support goes far beyond the physical transformation. It speaks to your belief in our scholars and their potential. Thank you for choosing us, our community, and our cause.”

As part of today’s unveiling, Orioles players, volunteers, and HOA representatives are on-site to unveil the classroom and interact with Harlem Park students and staff. Wegmans will also provide food and beverage for participating individuals.

The Adopt-A-School program is grounded in the belief that unwavering support and solid opportunities can play a pivotal role in accelerating student and school success. Together, the Baltimore Orioles and Harlem Park Elementary Middle School are building a foundation of hope, resilience, and shared commitment to the future of West Baltimore’s youth. In the first year alone, the club has hosted various events and activities for Harlem Park students and staff including:
