Charlie Ramos promoted to Major League staff

Major League Baseball today announced that umpire Charlie Ramos has been promoted to the full-time Major League staff to take the place of Brian Knight, who has announced his retirement due to injuries.

Ramos joins the full-time staff after working 529 assignments as a Minor League call-up umpire, including as a replay official, since his first assignment in 2020.

Knight announces his retirement after 16.5 years of service, following his promotion to the Major League staff ahead of the 2011 season. He made his Major League debut on May 7, 2001, serving as the third base umpire between the White Sox and Rangers, and worked 730 assignments prior to his full-time promotion in 2011. Knight was assigned to the 2013 AL Wild Card Game; the 2020 and 2022 AL Wild Card Series; the 2014 and 2015 NL Division Series; the 2016, 2021 and 2023 ALDS; and the 2022 NLCS before receiving his first World Series assignment in 2023. Additionally, he worked two All-Star Games, serving as the right field umpire in the 2012 All-Star Game in Kansas City and the Replay Official for the 2022 Midsummer Classic at Dodger Stadium. He worked the Tokyo round of the inaugural World Baseball Classic in 2006 and was also a member of the umpire staff for the 2023 World Baseball Classic. He was behind the plate for Jon Lester’s no-hitter at Fenway Park on May 19, 2008.
