NEW YORK -- Sean Manaea’s second Minor League rehab start went far better than his first.
The right-hander struck out four batters over 2 2/3 scoreless innings Tuesday in a start for High-A Brooklyn against Asheville, allowing two singles and a walk. That outing came after he gave up four runs (three earned) in his rehab debut for Brooklyn on Friday.
Most importantly, Manaea stretched out to 46 pitches. The left-hander, who is rehabbing from a strained right oblique, will spend most of this month continuing to add to that pitch count. He’ll likely need at least three more Minor League starts before the Mets will consider activating him.
The team’s best pitcher last season, Manaea went 12-6 with a 3.47 ERA over 32 starts. He subsequently re-signed in Queens on a three-year, $75 million deal, but Manaea injured his oblique in Spring Training and has been rehabbing ever since.
