ARLINGTON -- Scott Littlefield, who spent the last 16 years as an integral member of the Texas Rangers baseball operations department, passed away on Friday morning in Houston, Texas, where he was on assignment for the team. He was 59.

Mr. Littlefield, who was Special Assistant, Player Personnel at the time of his passing, was a 34-year MLB scouting employee with three different teams.

“The Texas Rangers are devastated by the passing of Scott Littlefield,” said Rangers President of Baseball Operations Chris Young. “Scott was one of the most respected scouts in Major League Baseball who had an incredible impact on this organization. His voice was influential in all aspects of our baseball operation from professional, amateur, and international scouting to Major League player evaluation. He was an invaluable resource and advisor.

“More importantly, he was one of the most genuine and caring individuals in the game. The Littlefields are a baseball family with his two children and two brothers all working for MLB teams. Several of us were just with Scott in Houston this week, and his passion for our team never waned.

“I join the entire Rangers family in sending our thoughts and prayers to his wife Heather, children Tyler and Erika and all of Scott’s family.”

Mr. Littlefield joined the Rangers' organization in November 2009 as a professional scout and has also been heavily involved in the club’s amateur and international scouting operation. He was honored as Texas’ Red Jacket Scout of the Year in 2019. During his tenure with the club, the Rangers advanced to the playoffs six times.

He previously scouted for the Atlanta Braves (1991-97) and Pittsburgh Pirates (1997-04). The native of Maine resided in Long Beach, Ca.

Mr. Littlefield’s son Tyler is a scout for the San Diego Padres and his daughter Erika is an amateur scouting assistant for the Baltimore Orioles. His brother Dave is a former General Manager with the Pittsburgh Pirates while brother Mark is the New York Yankees Medical Coordinator.

Information on services for Mr. Littlefield will be announced at a later date.
