Marlins give back ahead of new school year

Through a series of four distributions, the Miami Marlins Foundation's annual back-to-school initiative equipped over 10,000 elementary school students across Miami-Dade and Palm Beach Counties with essential supplies for the new school year. Partnering with the Kiwanis Club of Little Havana, the week-long effort delivered notebooks, pencils, and other necessities, ensuring students start the academic year equipped to succeed.

At the second event, held at Kensington Park Elementary School, Marlins shortstop Otto Lopez, joined by his wife and baby daughter, Marlins President of Business Caroline O’Connor, PNC Bank’s Southeast Florida President Cressman Bronson, and a dedicated group of volunteers, handed out supplies and tickets to a Marlins game.

“It means a lot, just to see them smiling—it brings back all the emotions from when I was their age,” Lopez shared. “I want to find ways to help people, so we love being here today.”

The joy was palpable as students streamed into the school’s library, their faces lighting up at the sight of colorful supplies and the lively presence of Billy The Marlin, accompanied by upbeat music.

“We extend our sincerest gratitude to the Marlins for the years of partnership dedicated to serving our community,” said Jorge A. Fernández, Kiwanis of Little Havana Foundation Chairman. “Our shared commitment goes beyond generous donations and sponsorships—it is reflected in our unwavering dedication to the community we share.”

Lopez also saw the event as a chance to set an example for his daughter. “It’s important to be here because I want to teach her the value of giving,” he said.

The series kicked off on August 14, with players from the Marlins’ Single-A affiliate, the Jupiter Hammerheads, visiting Jupiter Elementary School. On August 19, former Marlin Antonio Alfonseca brought smiles to students at Citrus Grove K-8 Center and Lenora B Smith Elementary. The Marlins front office staff and volunteers from presenting sponsors, including Amazon and PNC Bank, also rolled up their sleeves.

These distributions not only provide practical support but also foster a sense of community and inspiration for students. For more information on the Miami Marlins Foundation’s ongoing efforts, visit Marlins.com/Foundation.
