The Rangers placed pitcher Jon Gray on outright waivers Thursday, and the right-hander went unclaimed by any other club, according to a report by The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal.

Gray cleared waivers at 1 p.m. ET on Saturday, according to Rosenthal. Gray went on to allow four runs in 2 1/3 innings during Texas’ 14-2 loss to the Blue Jays later that afternoon.

The 33-year-old, who is in the final year of a four-year, $56 million deal, didn’t debut this season until July 23 after he fractured his right forearm midway through Spring Training, when he was struck by a comebacker. He has about $3 million remaining on his contract.

Gray was a key member of the Rangers’ rotation in 2023, posting a 4.12 ERA over 29 starts during the regular season and making three more appearances in the postseason as the franchise won its first World Series title. He was limited to 102 2/3 innings last season while being bothered by groin and foot injuries. He owns a 7.71 ERA through 14 innings out of the bullpen this year.

The Rangers, with a 61-63 record, fell to five games behind the final American League Wild Card spot with Saturday’s defeat. Rosenthal reports that the club doesn’t intend to place other players on waivers for as long as they are within striking distance of a playoff spot.
