Misiorowski the sports betting favorite for NL ROY

Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Jacob Misiorowski has stormed onto the scene since making his MLB debut on June 12. In just a few starts, Misiorowski has established himself as the National League Rookie of the Year favorite at the BetMGM online sportsbook.

Misiorowski officially became the NL front-runner following his second start last Friday in a win over the Minnesota Twins. He’s now -135 to win the award after outdueling Paul Skenes, last year’s NL Rookie of the Year, in a matinee matchup against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

“Misiorowski became the favorite with us after his performance against the Twins last Friday and has only kept shortening since then,” BetMGM trading manager Halvor Egeland said. “He's our second-most-bet player to win the award, only behind Drake Baldwin, with most of that action coming in over the last week.”

At his current -135 price tag, Misiorowski has a 57.45% implied probability of winning NL Rookie of the Year. Misiorowski started as a 50/1 long shot and was trading at 40/1 in early June before making his debut.

Not counting the COVID-shortened 2020 campaign, there hasn’t been a Rookie of the Year winner who made their season debut in June since Yordan Alvarez in 2019. He made his season debut on June 9, finishing with a 3.7 WAR in 87 games the rest of the way.

Misiorowski’s June 12 start date would mark the latest season debut for a ROY winner since Wil Myers in 2013. Myers made his first appearance for the Tampa Bay Rays on June 18 before registering a 2.2 WAR in 88 games.

During that stretch, Skenes (2024 NL ROY) and Jacob deGrom (2014 NL ROY) are the only pitchers to win the trophy after making their first start after April. They made their season debuts on May 11 and May 15, respectively.

Although history isn’t on Misiorowski’s side, the hard-throwing righty can take advantage of a chaotic race. There have been six different NL Rookie of the Year odds favorites since the market opened in January: Roki Sasaki, Dylan Crews, Agustín Ramírez, Luisangel Acuña, Drake Baldwin and Misiorowski.

The latest odds suggest that Misiorowski has some cushion in this market entering July.
