NEW YORK -- After he was told earlier this week that he was being removed from the rotation and will be working out of the bullpen moving forward, Mets right-hander Frankie Montas told manager Carlos Mendoza that he still considers himself a starter.

But in eight games for New York, Montas has a 6.38 ERA, while opposing hitters have a slash line of .296/.349/.526 with eight home runs.

“I haven’t been able to hit my spots the way I want to … in certain moments of the game,” Montas said. “I’m trying to get better in … executing pitches.”

Montas is available to come out of the bullpen starting Thursday against the Braves. He will likely become a long man where he can give the Mets multiple innings.

“In the meantime, if [being in the bullpen] is the way I can help this team and contribute to get a win, I’m definitely willing to do it,” Montas said. “I’m a great competitor. I take a lot of pride in the way I prepare myself for games.”

Montas said he respects Mendoza for telling him about the demotion ahead of time. It will help Montas be mentally prepared for his new role.

“I have a lot of respect for Carlos. If he thinks that’s the best way I could help, I’m OK with it,” Montas said.

The Mets signed Montas last December to a two-year, $34 million contract, but he can opt out after the 2025 season.
