Drawing for a Cause: Marlins join pediatric patients at alex’s place
In honor of National Coloring Book Day, the Miami Marlins brought color, creativity, and compassion to alex’s place, a pediatric hematology-oncology clinic at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, part of UHealth – University of Miami Health System.
Marlins outfielder Griffin Conine, catching coach Joseph Singley, and beloved mascots Billy The Marlin and Pepito kicked off a series of upcoming events focused on supporting pediatric cancer patients. The Marlins spent the morning alongside young patients at alex’s place and their families, turning a routine Thursday into a day to remember.
Together, they colored baseball-themed pages and drew portraits of Marlins players. The artwork created during the visit will be featured at loanDepot park on Childhood Cancer Awareness Day on September 7. Some of the masterpieces will help inspire the design for the 2025 Childhood Cancer Awareness Day t-shirt.
This visit is the first of three programmed events in partnership with Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, part of the University of Miami Health System. The series is designed to recognize young patients for their bravery and give families a break from the routine of treatment.
"The children were very happy and excited to play with Billy The Marlin and have a chance to color, interact with some of the team players and contribute to the next T-shirt design," said Julio Barredo, M.D., director of children’s cancer programs at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, part of the University of Miami Health System. "Sylvester looks forward to partnering with the Marlins every year, and we appreciate their support with helping our pediatric patients have fun with their families and community."
alex’s place provides outpatient care for children with cancer and blood disorders in a space built with their needs in mind. The clinic includes colorful exam rooms, interactive play areas, an on-site classroom, and a garden for quiet reflection.
The next events include a Starlight Foundation gifting experience on August 26 and the annual Childhood Cancer Awareness Day game.
