Cardinals-Mets postponed Saturday; split doubleheader set for Sunday
ST. LOUIS -- For a second season in a row in St. Louis, the Cardinals and Mets had a game wiped out by rain. And for a second time this week, the Cardinals are preparing to play a doubleheader because of inclement weather.
Torrential rains throughout the day on Saturday forced the Mets and Cardinals into a split doubleheader on Sunday at Busch Stadium. Game 1 will start at 12:15 PM CT/1:15 PM ET, while Game 2 is scheduled to begin at 5:15 PM CT/6:15 PM ET.
The Cardinals will pitch right-hander Erick Fedde in Game 1 and right-hander Andre Pallante in Game 2. The Mets will send Saturday’s scheduled starter, Tylor Megill, to the mound in Game 2, while rookie Blade Tidwell gets the ball in the opener.
Busch Stadium’s gates will open at 10:15 AM CT for Game 1, while gates will reopen at 3:45 PM CT for Game 2. Tickets from Saturday's postponed game will be valid for Game 2. Additional Cardinals ticket policy details are available at cardinals.com/rain.
The Cardinals, who have dropped all five games this season against the Mets, had their game in Cincinnati rained out on Tuesday. That forced them into playing a doubleheader on Wednesday and they swept both games from the rival Reds. The Cards also played two games in Boston on April 6 because of a rainout a day earlier and lost both games of the doubleheader to the Red Sox.
St. Louis decided against starting right-hander Michael McGreevy, who was recalled from Triple-A Memphis on Saturday. Brought to St. Louis to offer “protection” in case a game goes sideways early in the day and multiple innings were needed from a reliever, McGreevy will work out of the bullpen on Sunday.
McGreevy, the Cardinals No. 10-ranked prospect, per MLB Pipeline, made his MLB debut in 2024 and went 3-0 with a 1.96 ERA over four big league appearances (three starts). He pitched well enough in Spring Training to make the big league Opening Day roster, but he was instead sent to Triple-A because of the logjam of starters the Cardinals have with Sonny Gray, Matthew Liberatore, Miles Mikolas, Steven Matz, Fedde and Pallante.
“I was just happy to be back in the big leagues,” said McGreevy, who was originally slated to start on Saturday for Memphis. “We’ve got a great group down in Memphis, but [MLB] is heaven, and this is where you want to be.”
The Mets, meanwhile, will send Tidwell to the mound in Game 1 for his Major League debut.
A 23-year-old who is the Mets’ 15th-ranked prospect, per MLB Pipeline, Tidwell said he received the call when vice president of pitching development Eric Jagers handed him a scouting sheet that had the St. Louis Cardinals listed as his scheduled opponent, rather than the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders.
Tidwell’s first reaction was to grab his puppy, a 12-week-old Cavapoo named Bentley, and start pacing outside. He called his parents, among others, to let them know the news.
“I thought I was close, but I didn’t know how close,” Tidwell said. “So it was a complete surprise.”
Behind Tidwell and Megill, the Mets will look to maintain the lowest road ERA (3.08) in the Majors.
