ANAHEIM -- The Angels have spent years trying to improve their organizational pitching depth and now boast 18 pitchers among their Top 30 prospects, according to MLB Pipeline’s midseason prospect rankings.
The Angels also improved their farm system by having the No. 2 overall selection in this year’s Draft and four of the first 109 picks. It’s a reason why they had seven players from the Draft join their Top 30 prospects list, including No. 2 overall pick Tyler Bremner.
Second baseman Christian Moore remains their No. 1 overall prospect but will graduate from the list soon, as he’s currently the club’s regular second baseman. Of their Top 10 prospects, the Angels have six starting pitchers, including Bremner at No. 2, No. 3 Ryan Johnson, No. 4 George Klassen, No. 5 Johnny Slawinski, No. 6 Caden Dana and No. 8 Chase Shores. Like Bremner, both Slawinski and Shores were drafted just last month.

Biggest jump/fall
Here are the players whose ranks changed the most from the preseason list:
Jump: Ryan Johnson, RHP (Preseason: 7 | Midseason: 3)

Johnson surprisingly made the Opening Day roster despite never pitching in the Minor Leagues last year after being selected in the second round of the 2024 Draft. He posted a 7.36 ERA in 14 2/3 innings in relief, struggling to get lefties out, so the Angels sent him down to High-A Tri-City to get stretched out as a starter. He excelled in that role with a 1.99 ERA in 10 starts, including throwing a one-hit shutout with 12 strikeouts in his last outing on July 5. But he’s been shut down since then, as the Angels are monitoring his workload. The 23-year-old has the stuff and plus command to be a starter and could be part of the rotation next year.
Fall: Matthew Lugo, OF (Preseason: 13 | Midseason: 25)
Lugo, one of four players acquired from the Red Sox at the 2024 Trade Deadline in the trade that sent Luis García to Boston, made his Major League debut in early May and got off to an impressive start before cooling down. He batted .238/.256/.548 with three homers, two doubles, a triple and six RBIs in 17 games before being sent back to Triple-A Salt Lake. He’s struggled with strikeouts offensively and needs to improve his defense as well. He looks like he could be an extra outfielder going forward.
